Structuring a report
- Make it easy to navigate for the CEO of the firm
- Have the most important information at the top (engage the reader)
Don’t do compound charts (hard for the first time reader). Also eyes moves from top to bottom — so the most important thing should be on the top and then move down.
Law 1: The most important thing in data storytelling is the message. Whether the chart you created tells the message that you want to tell. Be intentional with the message.
There is a difference between explainatory and exploratory data analysis. Every chart for presentation should tell a story, a chart isn’t for exploration. It should answer a question. There would be times though when people are looking for benchmarks (slighly different in takeaways).
No amount of bad data can replace good messaging.
Law 2:
A few things to keep in mind when exploring data:
Ask yourself:
- How big is the problem? What % of population does it impact? What the likely impact?
Writing a report:
- Important to start with what’s out there in the market
- List down all the questions that you want to answer
- Focus on questions
- Have charts that we want to replicate and explore
- Focus on ease of understanding
Let’s make sure they get the takeaway in less than 5 seconds.
Data Exploration Tips
→ So instead of just showing the data, add many annotations, saying the message what the data is showing.
→ Instead of making the most important line red, you could also make it thicker
→ Instead of making it minimal, you need to add things that help with understanding
Make sure to draw out the attention. What should the reader focus on first, then next and then next.
What’s the message?
→ Color contrast is the key
→ Maximize Contrast
→ Less distraction is the key
- Usually keep it 1 idea per chart
- Don’t make it hard. Make it easy.
Important to have the z-shape of the chart
Don’t make it hard. Make it easy.
